Saeed Musah of Ghana designs this original akuaba or fertility doll. The figure is carved by hand from sese wood and adorned with recycled glass beads and brass inlay. Such dolls are sometimes carried by West African women who are hoping to conceive and have a healthy child. The artisan thoughtfully adds a couple of holes so that the statue can serve as a pen or pencil holder.
