Details

A girl kneels holding her cupped hands to her chest before performing the traditional Thai wai or greeting. The wai is a highly important reciprocal sign of courtesy. Hands are cupped together and the head is lowered while saying Sawasdee Khap, meaning "hello." "I have worked on small figurines to decorate the spirit house, which in Thailand is believed to house the guardian spirit of each home. I was wondering that if I could work on a figurine that is slightly bigger than the ones used for the spirit house, what position and expression should this figurine have?" recalls Duangkamol. "I remembered that our wai greeting has become recognized by people all around the world, and this is how I came to be inspired to create this little celadon girl wearing a Thai traditional costume."

"Gorgeous Elephant"

A beautiful shade of blue, Duangkamols elephant is a wonderful addition to our household. While a simple and modern design, the distinctive glaze gives it a timeless beauty, as if it were unearthed from an archaeological dig. We will cherish it always.

"Breathtaking Baby Elephant"

I was captivated by the beauty and sweetness of these handmade celadon dessert plates. I bought 4 and plan to buy more. They are so charming that I told my husband you cannot eat from them. You can only look at them. They almost bring tears to my eyes. You are clearly blessed with an incredible talent for spreading joy to others while simultaneously depicting the beauty of the animal world in all of its majesty. I honor you. Blessings, Dr. Melissa

I have fallen in love with your ancient art of handmade celadon glazed dishware. I am slowly acquiring a full set of dinnerware and chose these beautiful rendered plates to decorate my table. My deepest appreciation for your talents. Namaste. Dr. Melissa

Preserving Traditions

Preserving Traditions

Duangkamol's mother sent her to study ceramics with an elder master. From him, she learned the basics but, with diligence, she has mastered this art herself. For Duangkamol, every batch of ceramics is a lesson. She eschews the chemicals common to modern celadon production, preferring instead to use the ancient natural process for glazing. This process is difficult to control. Her 100 percent natural glazes are made from wood ash and straw ash. These materials have been used for generations to define the distinctive crackle particular to celadon. Her workshop is a celadon laboratory with skills handed generously back and forth from master to student and from worker to worker.

The ceramists who work with Duangkamol range in age from 25 to more than 70, and most of them have been with her for years. They enjoy their work and are happy to have a good income. She strives for a stress free work environment. Duangkamol credits the steady orders she receives from Novica customers with reducing her personal stress, and she now feels more free to focus on her art.
