The necklace from Samuel Lovi is crafted by hand with soapstone beads and is centered by a mask of a woman bearing the scarifications of her tribe. Crafted in a range of gray, brown, green and cream, the beads are fired for an antiqued, weathered look. Throughout Africa, scarification practices are usually done as a rite of passage and may also convey social, political, or religious roles. Lovi calls this design "Kokoduro," the Akan term for bravery. Fastens with a brass hook.
