Details

Filled with color and Ashanti spiritualism, this inspired painting is by Frank Nii Amaarh Ashiteye. "I included masks of various colors with different meanings: the green one symbolizes fertility, productivity, and health. The blue mask is for the love that once bound us to our ancestors, the purple one stands for royalty while the ocher and white mask talks about spirituality and the journey of the living and the dead. The brown mask represents the death we face if we don't learn from our past experience," says the talented Ghanaian artist as he proceeds to describe the Adinkra symbols within his composition. "The white Sankofa bird, depicted with its head turning back 'means back to my roots' and encourages us to learn from experience. On its back I included Gye Nyame which translates to 'except God' and proclaims God's supremacy. On the lower left corner is Me Ware Wo and it stands for commitment and perseverance."
