Details
Known as an akwaaba, or akuaba, this fertility doll is traditionally given to women who hope to have children. Ghanaian artist Leopold Twum paints the fertility doll in an expressionist style, depicted alongside a traditional comb. Adinkra symbols seem to float in space, and the akuaba is decorated with jute fiber applied directly to the canvas.
