Set of 8 Nesting Boxes with Hand Painted Cock Fight Scenes, "Tajen"
Combining art, customs and controversy, Tjandra Jaya Kusuma depicts the Balinese tradition of cock fights, or tajen. The Balinese artisan represents the event as set in a past era, featuring scenes with the owners holding their precious cockerels while others drink palm wine and women sell such treats as watermelon and rice. Each of the 8 Indian kapok wood nesting boxes is painted by hand with admirable detail.
Today, throughout Indonesia, cockfights are staged before religious ceremonies, as an offering to the gods. The government forbids cockfights for non-religious purposes.
