Details

By Emmanuel Atiemoh Yeboa, this bold composition depicts a West African mask. The Ghanaian artisan paints the image by hand on card stock, then creates cutout areas which he backs with cotton batik cloth in brilliant colors. The stylized eyebrows are a simplified image of the sankofa adinkra symbol. The adinkras visually convey popular wisdom. Sankofa shows a bird looking over its shoulder. It means "go back and take what you have left," advising the acceptance of one's own origin, and learning from this history to correct the future. One of the most meaningful symbols of Ghanaian philosophy, it stands for positive reversion and revival.

The collage arrives framed in ceiba wood.
