Romantic Wood Sculpture of Lovers by African Artisan, "Lovers"

"I became interested in crafts when I was a child. I used to play with akuaba dolls and the story behind the crafts attracted me so much that anytime I do a carving, I try to give it my own name.

"I am a hardworking, sincere and a respectful person born July 23 in Accra. I get my inspiration from my friends, co-workers and family.

"I was taught by my family members and friends. I had to take my training sessions very seriously when I was learning.

"In 2000, I set up my workshop. It was very difficult to even get a loan from the bank. But through exhibitions and sales I have been able to start and I hope it will all be well. "I am a designer — I create my own designs and carvers craft them for me. Our materials are mahogany and osese wood. What I like best about my craft is the carving of an image from raw wood.

"The qualities I look out for in the artisans who collaborate with me are talent and a vision to produce different types of carvings. My community benefits from my workshop because it has opened employment opportunities in the polishing, cleaning and packaging of our works.

"My dreams for the future include selling my designs around the world and also exhibiting my works in international fairs."
