Reverse Painted Glass Jewelry Box from Peru, "Light Green Mandala"
Fit for all your treasures, this jewelry chest by Gelacio Giron features intricate floral designs hand-painted over panes of glass in light green and gold. He mounts the glass parts over gold-painted wood to shape the box, which has two functioning drawers, and a lidded secret compartment on top.
Gelacio fell into the art of reverse-glass painting through an uncle after losing his job as a government accountant. This technique was born in Europe during the Middle Ages and later on spread to Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It's come to hold a special place in Peruvian folk arts after being revived in the 1960s and has evolved to accommodate multiple regional styles.
