Gathered in the atrium of a village church, woman in traditional clothing accompany the cofrade, or a member of the religious brotherhood known as a cofradía. He uses a handkerchief to reverently grasp a staff and holds a lighted candle in his hand. Carolina Cabrera depicts a ritual in the village church of Chichicastenango. "I wanted to convey the solemnity, the happiness and the magic of these ceremonies," the Guatemalan artist confides.
