With a faraway glance, a young Kaiapó man proudly wears his hair in the legendary style of his community. Brazilian artist Moza lived among the different communities in the Mato Grosso region, studying their customs and traditions, especially artistic, which she uses to paint this extraordinary portrait. After priming the canvas with sand and carbon, Moza mixes sand and clay for the face, adding red obtained from the annatto seed. She uses carbon to delineate the geometric patterns on the face, and mixes clay with carbon for the long black hair.
The Kaipó community is spread out amongst various villages on the banks of the Xingú River. Their name, Kaipó, means "Men who look like monkeys" – which they received because they wear monkey masks during their rituals.
