Peru Archaeology Mountain Cat Ariballo Replica Vessel, "Andean Mountain Cat"
Shipping Timeframe: 3 to 6 weeks. Delivery Estimate
The ariballo is a recipient that dates from pre-Inca times. It takes its name from its similarities to such bottles used in ancient Greece. Walter Jose Acosta crafts this exquisite example in hand-painted terracotta. Working in red, black and tan – colors favored by pre-Hispanic peoples – he recreates geometric and animal motifs. An enigmatic feline graces the front, perhaps alluding to the Andean mountain cat, considered a sacred animal by the Aymara and Quechua peoples.

"Beautiful Craftsmanship!"

This stirrup spout vessel is truly remarkable. As someone who is passionate about civilizations of the pre-Columbian era, the Moche culture of Peru is one of the most fascinating. Ive been reading about the place of bats within pre-Columbian civilizations recently and have been astonished by the rich history and allegory that surrounds bats in the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica and South America. I will treasure this piece of art for the rest of my days.
