Frank Odei Amoani replicates the art of the Senufo people as he crafts this wall mask by hand. The brown sese wood mask features two faces in profile for a headdress, and cotton twine under the face. Exposed teeth and half-closed eyes result in a fearsome expression, while clay applications provide a weathered appearance.
The Senufo people of Ivory Coast, Mali and Burkina Faso live off farming and occasional hunting. Senufo masks combine animal and human in a single design; they are crafted by specialist artists who live apart from the rest of the village. Senufo artists have a high status in their society as their masks and sculptures are believed to have the power to help communication between the living and their dead ancestors.
