Details

Moving to the beat of drums and maracas, barefoot dancers perform an ancient ritual. The protagonist wears a deer headdress and his companion, the suit of the spotted jaguar, Balam. A marimba melody weaves its spell in this painting by Antonio Coche, who selects an unusual perspective to depict the traditional Guatemalan performance.

Legend tells how the Spaniards asked why the Maya didn't hunt deer for food. "We have no arms," they replied. Together, they visited the hunter on the hill and asked Tzuultaq'a, god of the mountain, for permission, which was granted. The conquerors went hunting with their guns, which angered the deer to the point of fury.

So the Maya prepared a dance to placate the animals. It shows how the old hunter hunted the deer, and was then carried back home by the monkeys, the bull, the tiger and the dog so he could hunt no more that day. The Maya told the Spaniards, "We have brought you the deer." And all danced together with great joy.
