Olive and Lichen Striped Cotton Shawl from Mexico, "Zinacatan Paths"
Creating striped patterns of olive and lichen, cotton yarns are woven together by hand on a traditional telar de cintura (backstrap loom). Mexican artisan Petrona Perez and Asociación de Artesanas create this shawl that celebrates the handicrafts of Zincatan. The lichen stripes become more pronounced as they approach one side of this shawl. Colorful geometric patterns and dangling fringes accentuate this shawl at either end.
