Oaxaca's Gregorio Ruiz comes from a family of weavers, and says he feels, "...very proud to preserve this art, which my parents learned from my grandparents." The Mexican artisan prepares the material that is used for this superb Zapotec wool runner using the traditional method where the wool is washed using soap made from the root of the amole plant, a type of agave. Woven using a foot loom, the fringed runner's design consists of a series of horizontal lines some of which are intersected by crosses. The colors that appear in the pattern, which include ivory, pine green, and black, come from natural dyes.
