Like many artisans, Gregorio Ruiz is creatively stimulated by his surroundings. "The culture and natural environment of Oaxaca inspire me," he comments. His hometown, Teotitlán del Valle, has a rich weaving tradition, and the Mexican artisan comes from a family of rug makers. Using a foot loom and working with 100% wool, he weaves this Zapotec rug in rich crimson accented with black and ivory. Diamond shapes, frequently seen in Zapotec designs, sit at the center of the geometric pattern which is created with natural dyes. Fringe at both ends completes the vibrant rug.
