Details

"This sculpture represents the discovery of maize by our people," Nicolas Chavez Sojuel says. The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the ancient Maya, tells how maize is hidden in a mountain. The mountain cat, the coyote, the parrot and the crow together revealed its location to the gods, who took both white and yellow corn from the mountain and gave it to the goddess Ixmucané. She ground the grains nine times and, from the precious corn masa, the gods fashioned human beings. Thereafter, the Maya were known as the People of Maize.

Working in cedar wood, the Guatemalan artisan masterfully carves the characters as they travel in their canoe. The god of maize sits in the center, accompanied by a spider monkey, parrot, dog and iguana. Lesser deities row the boat toward the mountain where the maize is hidden. The characters wear necklaces of pinewood beads, and leather bracelets and loincloths.

The following pieces are removable to safeguard them during shipping. Lesser gods: oars and part of one headdress. Monkey and parrot: tails and hands. Iguana: both hands. Maize god: hands and four pieces of the headdress.
