Juan Ramon Flores honors Maya custom with this extraordinary sculpture known as the simiente (seed). "This seed of Maya knowledge is shaped like an egg with the purpose of sharing our cultural roots with the rest of the world," explains the Guatemalan artisan. "I carved the nahuales glyphs from the Maya calendar at the center, and their numerals on the top, along with the sun." Hand-carved of palo blanco wood and stained with a darker finish, the sculpture is divided into sections that swivel. The sculpture includes a stand and underneath it are the names of each nahual.

As an object this wood carving is beautiful. But I am very disappointed. I was excited to find this as a way to mark the passing of the days of the Mayan calendar. Unfortunately this is a decorative item rather than a useable calendar. The glyphs, especially the lower row. are not recognizable as the glyphs of the Mayan tzolkin, and, in the lower row, there are only 19 glyphs, not 20! Had there been a complete series of 20 glyphs I probably would have found a way to use this. As it is, I am returning it.
