Empowering its female workforce through crochet work is how Aadi seeks to improve lives in Begumpur, a slum of South Delhi. Founded in 2003 by social worker and entrepreneur Sashi Agarwal, Aadi began with three members and currently employs 45 women.

"I want each and every women associated with my initiative to have economic freedom, dignity and freedom to pursue her dreams," Agarwal says.

Aadi originally sought to educate preschool children, but has expanded its focus into community development through education and alleviating poverty. Aadi provides women training in crocheting and employs different skill levels, allowing them to earn money for their efforts.

In an environment where few real-life role models exist, Aadi's mission is to elevate the community's quality of life by focusing on samskaras (values). Agarwal said the children that Aadi reaches out to make a commitment to create a better future by promising one thing — I will succeed in all that I do.
