“Hi friends! I am Mohd. Sharif from Jodhpur, the ‘Sun City’ of India. I was born in February of 1980. I am very hardworking, honest, and a person of strong determination. I never give up, drawing inspiration to learn from my failures.
“I completed high school and took a production job at an art and handicraft factory. I was greatly influenced by the beauty of the handicrafts. Since my childhood, I was interested in crafts. I always used to wonder how wood or iron could be transformed into attractive items. My curiosity about how these different crafts were made attracted me to this world of arts and crafts.
“When I started this production job, I used to watch the artisans craft beautiful pieces. I was so interested in handicrafts that I decided to learn myself. With observation and practice, I quickly learned this art. My favorite thing about this craft is giving shape or form to wood. It is very challenging to craft something from wood. I get my inspiration from nature. I try to create fine and unique things every time.
“Initially, I tried to learn by myself, but I could not succeed in making different types of products. Then, I decided to learn from different people who are masters in their fields. It took a lot of hard work to learn this craft. Once I mastered it, I started crafting some products and received some appreciation. I design and craft entirely by myself.
“The toughest moment in my life came when the art and handicraft company where I was working decided to close down. I managed to arrange some funds and opened my own workshop in 2009. I had to face lot of difficulties and hardships during the initial years, but now there is no looking back. When I started my workshop, I only had two or three artisans working with me. Now, we are a team of 10.
“Together, we craft beautiful boxes, trays, tealight holders, and other items. We work as a family that strives towards attaining goals with proficiency and dedication, with client satisfaction being our highest priority. Our wooden products are neatly painted using poster colors and embellished with acrylic stones.
“We have participated in many local fairs in and around Jodhpur. I am very enthusiastic about my work. I also teach my craft to whoever is keen to learn. Presently, I am the only person in my family who is doing this work, but I would love to teach my children or others the beauty of this craft.
“I dream to expand my work and spread the splendor of my craft to the entire world. I want people to appreciate the beauty of my work. I am thankful for Novica for giving me an opportunity to showcase my work and talent.”
