For his Zapotec rugs, Mexican artisan Gregorio Ruiz uses the time-honored techniques he learned from the weavers in his family and that includes the use of natural dyes. "I combine natural elements, like flowers, plants, seeds and tree bark when I prepare the dyes I'll use for a specific design; I use lime and salt to fix the colors. I recycle the remaining water so I get different shades of a particular color," he says. Wheat, mahogany, and pine green are some of the hues that appear in this 100% wool rug which is woven using a foot loom. The fringed rug's design is inspired by Zapotec cultural symbols and includes diamond shapes, stripes and fretwork.
This artist uses traditional techniques handed down through the generations and/or creates culturally significant items, helping keep these traditions alive.
Gregorio Ruiz has received 6 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $2500 and the most recent for $1900. Proceeds were used to purchase raw materials and a new loom for his rugs.
Every purchase from this artist has a profound impact on their livelihood and income.
