The Shona are a diverse people who live in parts of Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Mozambique. Known for their stone carving, many Shona artisans quarry their own rapoko soapstone, which they chisel and polish with hand tools. This elegant sculpture represents the endangered wattled crane, a symbol of longevity whose habitat in Zimbabwe and throughout Africa is dwindling.

"Excellent workmanship, but somewhat disappointed."

The concept is beautiful and beautifully done. My problem is with the colors of the stone. I really dislike the color palette of the stone and it requires extra lighting to properly show off the wonderful contours of the work. Without extra light, for example, the eye does not show. I wish there had been some way to choose the color (and yes I know it was mentioned about accepting the color that arrived). I am still considering returning the work, because of my personal dislike of the colors.

"Mixed"

Just got my order in the mail, today. I purchased the larger of the two. I'm really torn. On one hand, they are solid pieces of work, literally heavy, so they don't feel cheap. On the other hand, there are a significant amount of defects almost certainly from being handled without much care. Mine has a slight crack, but pretty visible. The back of the neck is worn a bit right as if it was slid on concrete. The sheen on it is also just dull enough that any kind of smudge or fingerprint has been picked up on the exterior and is visible in ceratain angles of light. I'm really struggling with this one. The stuff is not so noticeable as to be completely distracting, but just noticeable enough to be distracting at more than a passing glance. This doesn't seem to be the result of the artists doing, rather the process after that in between the artist and wherever these are warehouses.

"Beautiful"

I bought the large and the small and was going to use as a set. They had suggested minor variations, however, they were completely different colors. So I have separated them. They are beautifully made, the smaller is not as perfect as the large on the carving, but lovely just the same.

"Fine art for bosses home."

The Cranes are perfect. I also ordered the small and large and they are different colored stone. I did not expect that BUT they are hand made and not from the shelves of a store. That is their beauty! Any imperfection makes that piece special. This art is what art is about.
