Huichol Beaded Dark Blue Skull with Huichol Icons, "Eagle Mother"
In cool tones of dark blue, seafoam green and peach, this beautiful skull conveys images of Huichol cosmology. On the crown, the six-sided bud represents peyote, an essential element of Huichol religion that is believed to enlighten the one who partakes of it. On the forehead, diamond-shaped talismans known as the "eyes of God" point to the correct path of life. A two-headed eagle appears on each side. The bird symbolizes Werika, venerated by the Huichol as their mother, the one who listens to their prayers and helps them when in need. One of her heads talks to God, while the other watches over the world. Centering the back of the head, Kawuyomaire is a blue deer who travels the heavens as a guide and guardian. He is the brother of the Huichol people. Higinio Hernandez Carrillo creates the images with tiny seed beads. He meticulously applies them one by one to the figurine, first covered in beeswax.
Do not expose this piece to direct heat or light, as it could soften the wax adhesive and thus loosen the beads.
