"I search for images and I feel excited about finding a way to depict them so that people may admire Andean art."
"I was born in Ayacucho on August 7, 1969, and one of my brothers is Teofilo Choquecahua, a Novica featured artist. I've loved art ever since I was a child. I enjoyed learning new things as well as creating. My family life is filled with artistic passion, and we bear this wonderful world deep within us.
"I come from a humble background and had to make many sacrifices to be able to go to the university. I wanted to study education, but wasn't able to finance my studies and was only able to stay for a term.
"I decided to go to Lima in search of better opportunities and I began to work with textiles. I also started to study electrical engineering, but soon realized that weaving was my life and all that I wanted to do. I decided to drop everything else and dedicate all of my time to weaving.
"I went through some tough times before I was able to have my own workshop at home. I took on many jobs to be able to follow the path I had set for myself, including construction work and ceramics, which I did for three years. I learned a lot from ceramic art under the tutelage of master ceramist Maximo Laura, and I apply it to my work now.
"One day I met Elizabeth, who taught religion to kids at church. I was so captivated by her that I approached her and soon a beautiful friendship developed. We fell in love and, when her family accepted me, we got married. We joined our lives for ever and our children symbolize the force of our love. She helps and supports me in everything.
"My art is inspired by everything I see. My mind absorbs it all, transforming it into an abstract composition. It's as if it begins like cubism and I transform it into realism. I search for images and I feel excited about finding a way to depict them so that people may admire Andean art.
"I appreciate the opportunity that Novica is giving me to show my work through their great website. Thank you for supporting Peruvian families on behalf of my wife and my children, and please receive my most heartfelt appreciation!"
