Jose Mendoza's 550-year-old home town, Teotitlán del Valle, in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, has a rich handicrafts tradition. He hand weaves this Zapotec rug in lovely shades of orange, light red, azure, and navy blue using a pattern based, as many of his designs are, on symbols found in archaeological sites in Teotitlán. Only natural dyes are used in the 100% wool rug. He says, "My inspiration is curious: an idea comes into my mind, after which I add colors and design and it ends up as a pretty rug."
