"We are proud of this design because it represents an essential part of our Maya beliefs," say the women of To'ooneel Ixoq. First they dye the cotton threads with sacatinta collected on a full moon night to obtain a steel blue hue, whereas the off-white bands are cotton’s natural color. Then they expertly weave the poncho on a back strap loom featuring half a fringe on the front, and on the opposite side on the back. Proceeding with their explanation, they say, "The embroidered part represents the mountains and volcanoes surrounding Lake Atitlan, and the circle represents the four cardinal points according to Maya cosmogony. It includes the magical cross, the bellybutton of the world where humans are linked to the heavens and to the underworld. Blue symbolizes Atitlan Lake, whereas off white represents the after life."
