Artisans Aida and Cristino Lavariega present a decorative wall hanging that preserves the traditions of tinsmiths from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. The artisan-crafted wall decor is made from tinplate using repujado or "repoussé" metalworking techniques and features the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, much loved by the Mexican people, as the subject. The figure is painted by hand, including intricate details such as the Virgin's facial features and mantle.
Aida uses traditional techniques taught by elder members of the community and passes down her knowledge to her children in order to continue creating crafts out of culturally significant materials.
Novica sales provide Aida with a steady income that has enabled her to grow her workshop. She is able to support not only her own family but to provide steady wages to her assistants, enabling them to support themselves and their families.
The Women's Empowerment badge is awarded to female artisans or artisan groups that are led by women.
Aida's income supports and provides for the education of her sons who are attending University.
