Details

Masterfully carving Balinese suar wood, Seji Taram recalls the legend of the dragon, Baru Klinthing. He was born to a concubine of Ki Ageng Mangir II, a rebel, who would never accept a dragon as his son unless the creature could wrap its entire body around Mount Merapi. To accomplish this, Baru Klinthing had to use his tongue to reach his tail. The angry father cut off the dragon's tongue, which became a powerful spear and source of power.

Since the death of her husband Ketut has not only survived she has managed to thrive. She has grown her business and is now able to employ other artisans in her community.

Ketut learned to carve from her husband. Sadly he passed away and she was left to support herself and two children. Before he died, her husband urged her to be strong and become her own woman. She has done so and has grown their business. She employs three carvers and two women to hand finish the carvings.

Ketut learned to carve from her late husband. Their workshop continues to produce his designs and also the ones Ketut has developed. She teaches her workers to carve and carefully instructs her finishers in how to refine each detail of the sculptures.

Novica sales provide Ketut with a steady income that has enabled her to grow her business. She is able to support not only her son but to provide steady wages to her workers enabling them to support themselves and their families.

The Women's Empowerment badge is awarded to female artisans or artisan groups that are led by women.

Ketut is a widow. Her daughter is grown and she is raising her young son alone.

Ketut is determined to give her son the best possible education.

"This is now a cherished heirloom."

Quite obvious that Seji Taram spared no effort in creating this piece of art! A fitting tribute to her late husband. It now "guards" the door to the master bedroom!
