Details

Moving stealthy through his habitat, the quick, fierce oceotl, or jaguar seeks his sustenance. Beneath, a serpent with two heads wriggles sinuously across this dazzling composition. A butterfly flutters above in this elegant nierika, or votive beadwork "painting" by Kupihaute.

The artisan, who writes fluently in the Huichol, Nahuatl, Spanish and English languages, talks about this work in his own words. "We, the creatures of eARTh, the indigenous people, use to be essentially semi-nomads. We are not settlers or colonists, therefore our cultures did not develop the habits of domestication, domination, appropriation, territorialization, warfare, pandemic diseases and all the direct consequences that have alienated the people from eARTh, overwhelming the entire world.

"Breeding, hunting, feeding, are the basic drives of our way of life. The feline and the serpent represent intelligent hunting, this permanent metamorphosis symbolized by the butterfly. Wise hunting is not marauding, or savage killing. There is a special link between hunters and hunted (symbolized in the meal). The game will be given to the hunter by dwellers in the spirit world as long as the hunter remains worthy. The hunters must treat the animals with respect, seeing that their flesh is not wasted and that their spirits are not insulted by acts of arrogance or ridicule. And the hunter must regularly perform a ceremony to commemorate this agreement.

"In the Wixarika and Mexika cultures a primordial meaning of nierika/tezkatl is the snare trap tended between trees along the path of the deer, in such a way that the antlers of the deer will become entangled in such a net after being chased and exhausted by the hunter. At this precise moment with my words used as feathered arrows I am trying to hunt your attention to be understood. For us, creatures of the eARTh, every creation is motivated by our essence: the hunting drive."

The artist has created the word "eARThiness" to emphasize the word "art" found inside "earth." "For me, this eARThiness is very important and meaningful."

The intricate images are formed with tiny seed beads. Kupihuate patiently places them one at a time with a needle made of abalone shell onto a huanacaxtle wood backing. Beeswax is used instead of glue.

The process is totally spontaneous, with no previous sketch or design. It is guided by the artist's unconscious to tell the stories that remain in our collective ancestral memory. He signs his work with the symbol of a butterfly on the reverse side of the nierika.

I bought this for my niece who loves indigenous cultures, rabbits and Pink Floyd. Well made and we both are delighted. Thinking about buying one for myself.
