Mexican artisan Alfredo Ruiz descends from weavers who continue to make wool rugs using time-honored techniques. The wool is washed using soap made from the root of the amole plant, a type of agave. It's then carded, spun, and dyed with natural dyes derived from local ingredients; rugs are woven using a foot loom.
Here he presents a gorgeous hand crafted Zapotec rug made from 100% wool. A geometric design in tangerine, navy blue, goldenrod, and cardinal red, highlighted with touches of cerulean, makes for a unique design inspired by the colors of the landscapes of the weaver's home state of Oaxaca.
