Handmade Floral Ceramic Wall Cross from Mexico, "Sanctified Land"

"I create pastillaje designs and filigree ceramic décor. The filigree is part of a family tradition that's been passed down from generation to generation. By watching my parents work, I was able to learn.

"I enjoy what I do because it distracts me. It's as if it takes me out of this world and transports me to another dimension. I concentrate on working and it helps me to eliminate stress.

"I enjoy working and overcoming challenges through everything I do. The most incredible and fun moments in my life have been with my children and family members as well as some of the most challenging times. When I didn't have any work or sales were low, everything came into place and something would help us have good sales. We feel proud of overcoming those times together, always together.

"I work with natural red clay, which I obtain it from the mines where they dig it out of the earth. My husband prepares the clay, I give it shape and he handles the kiln. Ceramics are something all my own and my work helps me stay economically independent.

"My inspiration comes from nature and from popular art. I especially enjoy thinking about the possibility of creating something with my hands to reach people in different parts of the world. Our decorative art can transmute itself into other realities.

"I hope to always have the feeling of improving to have a lot of work, because this is what I enjoy. Ceramics provide a wonderful way for my children not to miss out on anything. I love them very, very much."
