"When I see this mask I'm reminded of the stories that my grandfather used to tell me about roosters," says José Canil of this whimsical mask. "Our Maya ancestors held the roosters in high regard because they were used in different rituals and ceremonies to make a petition or an offering." Canil first carves the pinewood mask by hand and then paints it white with multicolored details.
