Handcrafted Signed Amazon Nativity Scene, "Shipibo Christmas"
This enchanting nativity scene is set in Peru's Amazon rain forest. Wearing traditional clothing, the Holy Family is portrayed as Shipibo people. Macaws, a toucan and an anaconda join jaguars, a tapir and a capybara to welcome baby Jesus. Erika Ulloa crafts the wooden box to house this retablo, or diorama and paints it in vivid colors. The figures are carefully modeled from clay and painted by hand.

"Zoo escapee? Jane Goodall visits Brazil?"
First--there is no way to click on no, this was not a gift.But it wasnt a gift. This is a beautiful piece, no question. But instead of the promised tapir, it has a very agitated, wild-eyed, cross-eyed chimpanzee. No doubt hes upset because he doesnt belong in a Brazilian rain forest--chimpanzees live only in Africa. Somewhere, in an African-themed Nativity, there must be a little tapir who is tired of explaining that he is not a baby elephant. I can cure the chimpanzees crossed eyes and wild-eyed appearance--I have a tiny paintbrush. But I dont see how I can turn him into a tapir.

This retablo by Erika Ulloa is SO BEAUTIFUL. A Burst of color when the doors of the retablo are opened. All the animals & birds surrounding the Holy family are Magnificent!!!

"Christmas Joy Retablo"
I have purchased three Erika Uloa retablos over the years. They have all been lovely--detailed, beautifully painted, and imaginatively depicted. This was bought for a young friend, who was thrilled with it.
