Expressing Africa's rich mask traditions, Ghanaian artisan Abdul Aziz Mohamadu hand-carves this mask of sese wood. Painted in colors of black and red while accented with etched line motifs, the mask features embossed brass plate over the forehead and cheeks that reflects traditional scarification practices. A clay rub gives this mask an antiqued finish. Mohamadu names it Bongani, meaning "be thankful" in South Africa's Zulu language.
