Delfina Ruiz weaves this wool rug on a pedal loom, in celebration of renowned Mexican artist Diego Rivera and his famed "Arum Lily Vendor" painting (1941). However, Ruiz depicts a woman as the vendor, not a man, as she weaves this Zapotec rug. As in Rivera's painting, the vendor is kneeling down, securing the large basket to her back with the aid of a person standing behind her. The composition is an allegory to the weight carried by Mexico's working class.
