Hand-painted by Eufrosia Pantaleon, this beautiful statuette represents Catrina, the popular icon of Mexico's Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The sculpture is crafted from ceramic in wonderful detail, from the broad-brimmed hat to the flowers at the hem of her skirt.
The original "La Calavera Catrina" was a zinc etching created by the artist José Guadalupe Posada in Mexico around 1910. Posada created the character, a female skeleton with an elegant hat, as a satirical portrait of Mexican natives who aspired to European style and denied their own heritage. The catrina has since become an emblem of Mexico's Day of the Dead celebration and a popular folk art subject.

Eufrosia has confronted adversity and hardship, but has still caused her strength to overcome every obstacle and continues to pursue her ceramic art with NOVICA.
Eufrosia uses traditional techniques taught by elder members of the Nahua community where she was born. The colorful style dates from the 1950s, but the ceramic tradition has its roots in pre-Hispanic times. The artisan passes down her knowledge to her children who will continue creating handicrafts of culturally significance.
