Mauricio Morales crafts a small ceramic bird figurine that features exquisite hand painted detailing. "The process for making these small animals was something I learned when I was small...since then it has become a passion of mine," says the Guatemalan artisan, adding that the bird sculpture is made for, "...all of those who love birds." He starts by mixing the clay and carefully shaping the figure, and then he adds aluminum legs and feet. After the bird is fired, he sands it, mixes his own colors, and paints the figurine. The result is a charming, meticulously painted blue jay complete with crested head, bright blue plumage, and white breast.

I have this one perched on an antique crock (on top of my Bakers Cabinet)... looking up at a blue jay painting that my son bought for me. I love how the two works of art look together. I have purchased many of Mauricios birds for myself and to give as gifts. All are incredible works of art.

This caught my eye: I have a wonderful friend and former teacher who collects unique bird figurines. I bought it for her, crossing my fingers because she has very high standards. I waited for her to open it. I held my breath. She looked at it, she touched it: she was absolutely delighted. It is far nicer than the very pretty picture can convey. I am thrilled.

I got both the Toco Toucan and Keel-Billed Toucan. They are wonderful and fit perfectly in my sunroom.
