Hand Made Religious Wood Retablo Diorama Andean Folk Art, "Cross of Lamentation"
After Christ's death on the cross, the image itself came to be venerated as one of the most important Christian symbols. Alejandro Chávez shows an empty cross, graced with a portrait of Jesus. Ladders reach to beams where ofrendas (offerings) have been placed. Figures in traditional Andean dress kneel below the cross, their eyes lifted in devout prayer. Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure from ceramic plaster and paints them by hand; the retablo receives an antique finish.

"A beautiful work of art!"
I received this packaged in a very secure manner. When I opened the package, I was surprised the Retablo was wrapped in a very nice paper in an inner package. The bow that was wrapped around the package had a small handmade figure of an Andean. A nice card signed by the artist (?) was included. The Retablo itself is a very magnificent work of art. The details are just amazing. I can't think of enough words to describe how great this is. It will be placed in a prominent place in my house. Thank you.

"Sitting on my at home alter"
Thank you my little retablo. I love all the little figures and the people praying. Each piece is painted with much care. I have a small collection of crosses from Central America and this now has a priced place among them. The box itself is precious and I am especially fond of the finish. I will treasure this retablo and I look forward to purchasing another.

"Beautiful!"
This is the third piece I have bought from Alejandro Chavez. His retablos are so detailed and exquisitely made. After my brother saw my Little Carnival retablo he wanted one. So I purchased the Fiesta in My Homeland for him as an early Christmas gift. Needless to say...he loves it!
