Details

This nativity scene by Jose Canil Ramos combines the strength of faith with traditional Guatemalan arts. Baby Jesus is welcomed by Mary and Joseph, as well as the archangel Gabriel, the Three Wise Men wearing golden crowns, and a donkey and cow. Ramos carves each figurine by hand from pinewood that was weathered and dried during the summer months. The characters' florid yellow robes and black cloaks are painted by hand, and Gabriel's wings are detachable. Featuring 9 pieces, this nativity scene preserves a tradition that was brought to Guatemala in 1649.
