Details

By yoman Indrawati Subrata, this beautiful sculpture is hand-carved of crocodile wood to depict the lovers Rama and Sita from the Hindu epic, Ramayana. The couple is captured in awe-inspiring fashion, featuring intricate details on their regal clothing. Nyoman recounts the tragic ending of the Ramayana: Rama questions the chastity of his pregnant wife, Sita, and in response she begs the earth to swallow her if she has indeed been true to her husband. She vanishes, leaving Rama all alone. The artisan carries on the extraordinary art work of her late father, Nyoman Subrata.

"Third artwork by members of the Subrata family"

I purchased my first Subrata Barong mask 25 years ago, and it guards the door of the family house since that time. When I established my own consulting business and needed a work apartment I went to Novica to see if I could find another piece by the Subrata Paterfamilias, Nyoman Subrata, who carved our old Barong mask and also a beautiful mer-person sculpture that I have at work. I was sad to see that he had left us, but delighted to see that another family member carries on his legacy. Very happy with this new Barong, who watchfully guards the door to my work residence.
