Hand Carved Maya Dugout Canoe and Paddle Wood Sculpture, "Maya Dugout Canoe"
Evoking the ancient Maya who paddled along Guatemala's lakes and rivers, Carlos Ramirez carves a replica of their boats. These dugout canoes are still in use today to cross the cold blue waters of Lake Atitlan. The artisan selects pale jobillo wood and lightly polishes it with vegetable oil. "I love this kind of wood," he confides. "Every single one will be unique and you can appreciate the marked natural grain and colors."
