The Fante people of southern Ghana are a subgroup of the Akan tribe. Traditional Fante beliefs include fertility dolls, which are used to promote fertility and ensure the birth of beautiful offspring. Artisans at the Foundation for the Advancement of Direct Trade craft this wonderful replica of an akuaba or fertility doll. The sculpture is carved by hand from native sese wood and given a dark brown finish.
