A black hippopotamus threatens strangers away by opening its huge mouth and exposing its teeth. The sculpture is carved by hand of sese wood with admirable care for detail. Painted black, this sculpture from Ernestina Oppong Asante celebrates this great creature, regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. In 2008 the hippo was assigned vulnerable status by the IUCN.
