Hand Carved and Painted Balinese Dancer Wall Sculpture, "Kecak Janger Dancers"
This stunning mask of two dancers is created by Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family. They are costumed in traditional garb for the Janger dance, a popular social dance that originated in the 1920s in Bali. The dance is performed by a group of male dancers, or kecak, and a group of female dancers, or janger. The artisan carves the mask from native suar wood and paints it in colorful detail to carry on the extraordinary art work of her late father, Nyoman Subrata.

"Magnificent!"
Barong is now busy protecting the house, frightening evil spirits but grinning heartily at the rest of us. He has added a colorful and life-enhancing presence that is a delight to encounter daily. After his arrival I particularly enjoyed watching Barong dance rituals on YouTube and highly recommend them to anyone contemplating ordering the mask since you ll understand his significance and character better. Incidentally, I had no trouble hanging him on the wall with a tiny bit of ingenuity.

"Wedding gift"
Absolutely beautiful. I gave this pair as a wedding gift and the recipients loved them. A unique piece of art has more meaning than a store bought, massed produced article and supports the craftsmen and their family. Please dont hesitate if considering a carving by the Subrata Family. You will not be disappointed.

"Legong Kraton Dancer"
VERY BEAUTIFUL carving. I love it. Carving takes me back to Legong performances in Ubud.

Preserving Traditions
Subrata has been a master carver for many years. He is one of the original Novica artisans and now provides work to other artisans at his carving workshop. He has trained his daughter, Indrawati, in all aspects of his business and she will keep the workshop going when Subrata no longer is able to.
