Hand Carved African Wood Sculpture of a Woman, "Dipo Girl"
With shy pride, a girl prepares for the dipo dance. Her adolescent body indicates she has reached puberty, an age associated with fertility. Among the Shai and Krobo tribes of Ghana, the dipo initiation ceremony is a series of traditional rites performed when a youth attains maturity. Working in pale sese wood, Kwame Kandavi depicts the nubile young maiden as a sculpture.
