Women wearing the traditional apparel of their Maya villages kneel to bundle spring onions into bunches to sell. Mario Sergio Aviles details the rich embroidery, colorful weavings and their intent expressions in this beautiful oil portrait. "In Almolonga, farmers take advantage of every inch of land. There, it is common to find onion leaves coloring areas a cool mint green. The women bring them to market in baskets brimming with the serpentine and odorous onions. Seated on the ground, the tie them in bunches while chatting about their own lives and their neighbors," the Guatemalan artist explains.
