Wear a piece of history with this conversation-starting pair of earrings made with pieces of Roman glass. Uncovered from ancient Roman sites in modern-day Israel, and sourced from a reputable antique dealer authorized by the Israeli government, the glass has picked up an iridescent patina from the earth in which it rested for about 2,000 years. 22k gold vermeil wires encircle each glass disk, which may have once been a wineglass, jug, or other vessel. Gold vermeil is a technique originally developed in mid 18th-century France as a way of gold-plating sterling silver.
Please note: To preserve the patina on the glass, please avoid contact with water.
Jewelry is so personal that I hesitated to get this for my wife, but I liked it so much, and our daughter (the art school graduate and family fashion guru) did too, so I thought I'd chance it. I liked the idea of something so old (the Roman glass) becoming part of wearable art. I also thought the design rather elegant - all the beauty of 22k gold with the strength of silver underneath. The matching necklace made a lovely set. The only question was my wife - would she like it? Cut to the chase - it looks wonderful on her and she loves it. We're both more than satisfied , and the gift pouches were a nice touch.
