Ghanaian Threadwork Wall Art, "Adinkra Symbols I"
Ernestina Oppong Asante shares the wisdom of the legendary Adinkra symbols with this colorful threadwork composition. She reveals the presence of three women holding symbols as she applies one thread at a time. The top one, represented by crossed swords, is Akofena which stands for courage, valor, and heroism. In the middle is Gye Nyame, which proclaims God’s supremacy over all. Sankofa, in the shape of a bird with its head turned to the back, symbolizes the importance of learning from the past. Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Akan of Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d'Ivoire and they represent concepts or aphorisms.

"Spectacular!"

Im not an expert on African art, so when I would see masks for hundreds of dollars in a shop I would not know what I was paying for. But this mask is just as beautiful and it supports living artists at a price I can afford. I am so happy I got this mask, and as soon as Im out of lockdown I look forward to showing it to my friends!!
