Frida Kahlo's 1938 "Self Portrait with Monkey" inspires this original decorative box by Mexican artisan Ana Maria González. Immortalized in film, Kahlo and her great love – muralist Diego Rivera – were leaders in Mexico's artistic and intellectual world during the first half of the 20th century. Crafted with decoupage techniques on pinewood, the lid on the oval box takes the form of two curved shapes that pivot out to open.
The Women's Empowerment badge is awarded to female artisans or artisan groups that are led by women.
Ana Maria Gonzalez has received 5 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $1600 and the most recent for $3400. Proceeds were used to purchase wood, paints, and solvents to increase production.
